Can a grammar checker or writing assistant raise your AI score?

Fixing typos, commas and agreement barely moves the score, because it leaves the sentence structure alone. Features that rephrase sentences are a different matter — "improve style", "shorten", "make it more formal". They rewrite the text with a language model and push it towards the even, predictable style detectors look for. If you want your own text to stay clean, use the checker for errors rather than rewriting, and keep the original version.

Fixing errors and rewriting are two different things

A classic spell-check corrects a word or a comma and leaves the rest of the sentence alone. Sentence length, word choice and rhythm stay yours, so to a detector the text barely changes. Only Style deviation may shift slightly, because the way you use punctuation is part of your profile.

Writing assistants can do more today, though: offer a whole sentence anew, even out the tone, shorten a paragraph. At that point you are no longer writing the text — a language model is, working from your draft — and the result carries its handwriting even when the ideas are yours.

Why rewritten sentences come out suspicious

When rewriting, a model picks the most common phrasing, evens out sentence length and adds linking phrases. That is exactly what the Machine feel and AI phrases detectors track, so rewritten passages jump out in them while untouched ones stay low.

Style deviation adds a second view: the rewritten text drifts away from how you usually write. When your history holds enough of your own texts, this shows even where the general score stays low.

How to keep your own text yours

Accept suggestions one at a time and only for errors, not in bulk and not for rephrasing. Save the original version, ideally with your working drafts — if anyone asks, you have something to show that the text came together step by step.

Before you hand it in, check the text and look at which sentences the detectors marked. Often they are exactly the ones you let the assistant rewrite; it is enough to restore those to their original form or write them again your own way.

FAQ

Is the spell-check in Word a problem?

Fixing errors on its own is not. If you use a feature that rephrases or summarises a sentence, though, the same applies as for any other writing assistant: the sentence has then been rewritten by a language model.

Does the Hidden characters detector count typographic spaces?

Not the ordinary non-breaking spaces that typographic tools insert. It looks for invisible characters that get into a text when it is copied from a chat, and for unusual kinds of space.

Do I have to disclose that I used a checker?

That depends on the rules of your school or client. They often treat fixing errors and rewriting with an AI tool differently — if you are unsure where your use falls, ask beforehand.

Try it on your own text

Paste a text or upload a file and look at the score and at the specific sentences that came out suspicious.
