Humanisation or paraphrasing: what is the difference

A paraphrasing tool says the same thing in other words — it swaps expressions and rebuilds sentences. A humaniser targets what makes a text read as machine-made: an even sentence rhythm, worn-out phrases and repetition. A paraphrase often leaves these properties in place, so the text sounds different but still mechanical. Neither helps with someone else's text: a reworded idea without its source is still plagiarism.

What paraphrasing does

A paraphraser goes sentence by sentence looking for another way to say the same thing: synonyms, a different word order, splitting or joining sentences. It is useful when you are struggling with the wording, or when you need to write the same idea a second time in a different way.

But it usually leaves the rhythm and structure of the text as they were. Ten sentences of the same length become ten different sentences that are still the same length, and "plays a crucial role" is swapped for "is of key importance", which is the same cliché in other words.

What humanisation does

A humaniser first measures the text and then changes exactly what it measured: it alternates short and long sentences, throws out phrases typical of AI instead of swapping them for others, and varies repeated collocations. The content, the facts and the order of ideas are meant to stay.

A good humaniser shows you what changed. In DetekceGPT you see the machine feel before and after the rewrite, what was removed and which checks passed — from a paraphraser you usually get only the new wording.

When to reach for which

Paraphrasing, when you want a different wording of your own idea and the style does not matter to you. Humanisation, when the text is fine in substance but reads as machine-made — even, and full of turns of phrase from generated text.

Neither helps with someone else's text. An idea reworded from another source without a citation remains plagiarism, and a text generated by a model is, after a rewrite, still a text whose use you may have to declare. Both deal with form, not origin.

FAQ

Can a detector recognise paraphrased text?

Often, yes. A 2026 study found that detectors mostly kept flagging the output of QuillBot's paraphraser, even though the result varied between attempts.

Does a paraphraser or a humaniser change the length of the text?

Paraphrasers change it depending on the settings, often shortening or lengthening the text. Our humanisation keeps the length: if the word count changes by more than a quarter, the text is repaired.

Can I combine the two tools?

You can, but every further rewrite takes the text further from the original wording. After each round, check the facts, numbers and terms.

Try it on your own text

Paste a text or upload a file and look at the score and at the specific sentences that came out suspicious.
