Copilot text detector

Paste a text that may have come from Copilot and see which sentences read like output from an AI chat. The demo below checks a section of up to 3,000 characters without signing in; with a free account you see all seven detectors side by side.

What the check can tell about text from Copilot

How Copilot text gives itself away

Copilot is Microsoft's assistant in Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Windows. It is not a single model: Microsoft uses models from OpenAI and Anthropic as well as its own, and the selection changes over time. Looking for a “Copilot signature” therefore makes no sense.

The check looks at the properties of machine writing in general: even sentences, repeated paragraph structure and predictable word choice. These apply regardless of which model happened to answer.

What the check cannot tell

Which model wrote the text. The result does not say that the text came from Copilot specifically. The differences between models are smaller than the differences caused by the prompt or by later edits, and an independent detector has no key to their watermarks.

Nor can it reliably recognise text that someone thoroughly rewrote, translated or mixed with their own after generating it. With text like that the detectors disagree and the result is borderline.

Text in Word and in e-mail

Copilot often rewrites or adds to part of a document in progress. The result tends to be mixed, so the score for the whole text comes out lower. Read the marked sentences and look at where the style changes.

With an account you pick the text type before checking, because an e-mail is judged differently from an academic paper. A short e-mail of a few sentences gives an indicative result only.

What to do with the result

A high score is not proof that the text came from Copilot, and a low one is not proof of the opposite. No AI text detector is one hundred per cent accurate.

When you check someone else's text, take the result as a basis for questions: why the author chose this source, what the term in the second paragraph means, how they reached the conclusion. When you check your own, it shows you the passages worth rewriting in your own words.

FAQ on checking text from Copilot

Which model in Copilot wrote the text?

You cannot tell that from the text. Copilot uses models from several makers and the check does not determine which of them wrote the text. It only measures the marks of machine writing.

Can I check a whole document from Word?

With a free account you can paste a text of up to 300,000 characters. The demo without signing in checks a section of up to 3,000 characters.

How much text is needed?

At least 100 characters; a continuous paragraph or a whole chapter is more reliable. With just a few sentences the result is indicative only.

Does it work on text from other models too?

Yes. The check measures the properties of machine writing in general, not the signature of a particular model, so you can check text from ChatGPT and other models in the same way.
